The city of Duisburg with a population of around 500.000 is the 15th largest city in Germany. It is found in the state of North Rhine Westphalia where it ranks fifth in size after the cities of Cologne, Düsseldorf, Dortmund and Essen. Close to 18% of the population of Duisburg is made up of foreigners.

The city lies on both sides of the river Rhine (one of the longest rivers in Europe). It is home to the world's largest inland port. It is also home to Germany's 9th largest university (University of Duisburg-Essen) with locations in Duisburg and Essen.
